KARACHI: Aitzaz Ahsan, leader of Pakistan People's Party (PPP), has been declared ineligible for the post of senator in a petition filed against him in Supreme Court (SC) on Monday, DawnNews reported.

The petition was filed by a leading member of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI), Dr Abid Rauf Orakzai, who declared him unsuited to the role of senator by referring to his incorrect recitation of Surah Iqhlas.

The petition requests the court to apprise the Election Commission with Ahsan’s incompetence, further declaring him unsuited to the role of senator according to the constitution.

The petitioner moreover requested the court to ask Aitzaz Ahsan to recite the first and second Kalmas and offer Salah, adding that Surah Iqhlas is the foundation of Islam.

The federal government and Chief Election Commissioner, Justice Tassaduq Jilani, have been included in the request.
