Meeting on traffic, security
PESHAWAR, June 20: The provincial government has decided in principle to introduce a management system to streamline traffic in Peshawar and a sophisticated security and surveillance system to have close eyes on criminal activities and to curb the same in the metropolis.
This was decided at a high-level meeting held here on Thursday with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Perez Khattak in the chair. The meeting was given a detailed briefing on the proposed traffic management and security and surveillance systems.
The chief minister directed the authorities concerned to hold a joint meeting of transport, police, Peshawar Development Authority, local government and other relevant departments to finalise modalities of the proposed schemes and to implement the same without further delay.
It was decided that instead of traditional means modern sophisticated technology would be adopted to organise the traffic system and improve the security system of the provincial capital and in this regard government would extend financial and administrative support to the departments concerned. — APP
Complaint cell set up
PESHAWAR, June 20: Following the government’s directives, a complaint cell has been established at the office of commissioner Peshawar to note and redress the public complaints across the Peshawar division.
Assistant Commissioner Tauseef told Dawn on Thursday that the complaint cell had been set up following directives from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Prevez Khattak and added that it would remain functional from 8am to 4pm daily.
The basic purpose of the cell, he said, was to check prices of daily use commodities, taking action against encroachers, adulterators and to redress complaints regarding compensation to the victims of violence.
He said Peshawar division included Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera districts and Khyber and Mohmand agencies. “We will note complaints of the people and then direct the officials of the relevant departments. The number of the complaints is increasing with each passing day and eventually the cell’s timing will also increase to facilitate the people,” he said. — Bureau Report
Demo against power outage
PESHAWAR, June 20: Residents of Hayakhel Hazarkhwani held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road on Thursday against the suspension of power supply to the area and demanded replacement of a faulty power transformer.The protesters were holding banners and placards inscribed with demands for early restoration of power supply. Area elders including Jamil Khan, Ziaur Rehman and Asadullah said that the power transformer of the area had been out of order for the past seven days and Pesco officials were least bothered to replace it.
Owing to the power suspension, they said, the area people were being faced with serious problems, particularly due to non-availability of water. “We paid Rs30,000 for repair of the transformer but it again went out of order on the very next day. The people have no other option except to fetch water from far-flung areas,” they said. — Bureau Report
Poultry farming
KHAR, June 20: Bajaur Agency Political Agent Syed Abdul Jabar Shah on Thursday said that backyard poultry farming played an important role to meet the domestic as well as socio-economic needs of the tribesmen.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a three-day training programme for the marginalised women of Mamond tehsil, he said that the government was committed to improve poultry farming and standard of life of the tribesmen in the agency.
The workshop was organised by the local administration in collaboration with USAID. At least 50 women of rural areas of Mamond participated in the training.
The political agent said that backyard poultry farming would play a vital role in the socio-economic development of the militancy-hit tribal areas and added that it could be a major source of income for the tribesmen. — Correspondent
Boy dies on road
KARAK, June 20: A young boy was killed after he was run over by a speeding passenger van here on Kohat-Bannu road on Thursday.
Police sources said that a ten-year-old boy, Basheer Ahmad, resident of Makori Tehsil Banda Daud Shah, was crossing the road near Makori when he was hit by the van. The boy died on the spot.
Mewnhile, police seized liquor and also arrested an alleged smuggler here on Thursday.
Police sources said that on a tip-off the SHO of Karak police station Mohibullah Khan intercepted a car coming from Bannu and after thorough search recovered 30 bottles of liquor and also arrested the driver identified as Ameen.
Police have registered FIR against the accused and started investigation. — Correspondent
