LAHORE: Justice Nasirul Mulk was sworn in as the new acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan on Saturday, DawnNews reported.
The outgoing Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry administered oath to Justice Nasirul Mulk at a ceremony held at Lahore registry of the apex court.
Supreme Court and High Court judges and other eminent lawyers were present at the ceremony.
Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court Bar Association boycotted the swearing-in ceremony.
Following the resignation of Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, who earlier held the post of acting CEC, Chief Justice Iftikhar on Friday had appointed Justice Nasirul Mulk to the position.
Justice Tassaduq Jillani had relinquished his charge after approving to assume the role of new chief justice of Pakistan from December 12.
Following his resignation, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) wrote a letter to the chief justice for the appointment of a new chief election commissioner.
Justice Jillani had taken charge as the acting CEC in Aug 2013 following the resignation of Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim from the post apparently in reaction to a Supreme Court’s decision about rescheduling of the presidential election.
