QUETTA: A powerful explosion has killed a child and injured 17 others in Balochistan's Chaman town on Thursday evening, police said.

Abdul Wahab, a police official said militants had planted a bomb on a motorcycle at Truch road area of Chaman, Pakistan's bordering town with Afghanistan.

He said all the injured were civilians who had gathered after evening prayers.

"The bomb went off in the middle of a crowd," he said.

He further stated the militants had parked the motorcycle on the road side where a large number of people were standing.

The blast rocked the entire Chaman town. The explosion was heard far and wide causing panic among the people.

Wahab said it is yet to be confirmed as to what was the target of the militants.

The injured were soon rushed to civil hospital Chaman for medical treatment by the rescue workers.

Police and frontier corps personnel were quick at the scene to probe into the incident. Dr. Akhtar Muhammad, the Medical Superintendent of civil hospital Chaman said the condition of three injured people was serious.

Security was tight in the town prior to local bodies elections in Chaman as in other parts of Balochistan. There has been no claim of responsibility for the blast.
