KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon on Friday said that Sindh cabinet will continue the consultation process over the schedule of upcoming local government polls till Dec 9, to avoid taking any decision in haste.

A meeting of the provincial cabinet, chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, was convened at the CM House to discuss schedule of the elections.

Memon said the cabinet members discussed the schedule with administrative and legal point of view and decided to prepare such a comprehensive plan that may justify each contesting individual and political party.

“Holding local bodies’ elections was a very important subject, that deals with millions of people and we are taking every step carefully in the interest of general public as Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has always been the custodian of people’s rights,” the minister said.

He said the Sindh government was also in consultation with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) with a view to look out for legal obstacles, if any, in the process of upcoming elections.

“PPP’s sincerity for holding local government polls can be judged from its working,” he said.

“The government in Sindh, which was the first to frame the LG law in the entire country, formulated its rules and regulations, made amendments to avoid lacunae in law, did delimitation and even took the administration to meet any eventuality under any compulsion in this regard.”

Without naming Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) or any other party, Memon said as compared to other political parties, more responsibilities lie on the shoulders of PPP because of being in the government.

The party has to look after each individual and party with justice and hopefully it would come up to the expectation of people and to serve them as it did in the past, he added.
