ISLAMABAD: Advisor to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Wednesday said the foreign policy of Pakistan was being formulated on the principles of non-interference, especially regarding relations with neighbours.

Speaking in the Senate he said improving relations with India was a priority of the government.

"The need is to devise a foreign policy which meets the needs of current scenario," he said.

He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's recent visit to Afghanistan had helped in removing misunderstanding between the two countries.

Aziz said unrest in Afghanistan did not suit the country and that Pakistan wanted Afghans to resolve their own issues themselves.

Proxy war in Afghanistan must be avoided as it would further deteriorate the situation there.

Aziz also said Pakistan's relations with Afghanistan have improved.

He observed the forceful occupation by the Taliban in Afghanistan would not be in the interest of that country adding that Pakistan would support the next Afghan government.

He also informed the House that Pakistan did not force Afghanistan to sign a security agreement with the US.

During the recent visit to Afghanistan, the prime minister had told the Afghan president that Pakistan would not interfere in its internal affairs.

He said Pakistan's foreign policy was on the right track and expressed optimism that it would have a far reaching impact.

Regarding India, he said it was top priority of the government to improve relations with India.

He said the prime minister had twice talked with his Indian counterpart by phone and also met him during the United Nations General Assembly meeting. However, he said, at present there was little chance of dialogue with India due to elections there.

The Advisor said Kashmir was not a bilateral issue between the neighboring courtiers. He said without solving Kashmir issue dream of durable peace, progress, prosperity and development in the region could not be materialized.

About US relations, he said strategic dialogue was started in 2010 but due to some incidents relations between the two countries could not move forward.

He said Pakistan also wanted to improve economic ties with the US.

"The government has a clear stance on drone attacks and also raised the issue at all international forums," he said.
