KARACHI: A shutdown was being observed in Karachi on Saturday on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement's 'appeal' to observe a day of mourning across Sindh against extra-judicial killings of party members, DawnNews reported.
Businesses, commercial centres and shops were shut in most parts of the country's financial capital.
Scarce public transport made it difficult for people to commute between different parts of the city.
On Friday, following the call to observe day of mourning, the Private School Management Association had also issued its notification for schools to remain shut.
Moreover, the University of Karachi had also postponed all exams scheduled for today with new dates of these to be announced later.
CNG stations were also closed across several parts of the city.
Similarly, in Sindh’s second largest city Hyderabad, shops, commercial centres and businesses remained closed.
The call to observe the day of mourning came when senior MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said more than 40 MQM workers had disappeared since the start of the operation of police and Rangers in Karachi which he alleged was being carried out to target his party.
Rizvi also demanded that authorities form a judicial commission to look into what he called the extrajudicial killings of his party activists.
