ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday sought a reply from Attorney General Suleman Aslam Butt (AG) by Mar 4 over the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), DawnNews reported.
A two-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Saqib Nisar resumed the hearing of petitions filed over the appointment of employees in crucial national institutions.
During the hearing, Justice Nisar inquired about the number of national institutions whose heads had yet to be appointed, adding that the country's Chief Election Commissioner had not been appointed in the past six months.
He further said that an acting CEC was meant to be appointed for a short tenure, whereas judges of the Supreme Court who were appointed to the post already had a number of pending cases before them.
Justice Nisar inquired as to when the CEC would be appointed and sought a reply from attorney general on the matter by Mar 4.
The coveted post had fallen vacant after the resignation of retired Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim in July last year.
