ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday suspended Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) notification that declared Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) chief Ahmed Ludhianvi to be the winner from the NA-89 constituency, DawnNews reported.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali heard the petition that was submitted by Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) member Sheikh Akram who was originally elected on the National Assembly seat from Jhang.
Akram’s counsel Makhdoom Ali Khan argued before the bench that the tribunal had not given any explanation as to why it had declared Ludhianvi as the winner from the constituency.
Therefore, the court directed the tribunal to hear all appeals submitted by concerned parties in this matter and make a decision within three months’ time.
Earlier, the election tribunal had disqualified Akram from NA-89 and declared runner-up Ludhianvi the winner. Consequently, the ECP had issued a notification announcing the tribunal’s decision.
