KARACHI: An Indian fisherman, who was an inmate of Malir District Jail, died at a hospital here on Thursday.
According to jail sources, 60-year-old Dadu Bhai, son of Narain Bhai, had suddenly fallen ill on Wednesday and was receiving treatment at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
“He had completed his prison term and was only awaiting release orders,” the Assistant Superintendent of Police at the jail, Shunail H. Shah, said.
“Dadu had been in the jail since November last year. He was just fine and in very good spirits during the past few days because he was looking forward to going back to India and reuniting with his family.”
“On Wednesday evening his blood pressure dropped drastically. He was immediately taken to the emergency ward of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he died on Thursday morning.
The cause of death is hypotension and cardiopulmonary failure,” he said.
The official said that not only Indian fishermen but also the Pakistani prisoners in the jail were saddened by the news.
“His body has been shifted to the Edhi mortuary and we are waiting for the Indian embassy to tell us what to do.
The authorities here cannot conduct a postmortem unless we get permission from the Indian embassy,” the ASP said.
