43 enforced disappearance cases disposed of

ISLAMABAD: The Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances has disposed of as many as 43 cases in the month of June.

The commission, comprising the former senior most judge of Supreme Court, Justice Javed Iqbal, and retired police officer Mohammad Sharif Virk, conducted proceedings of the cases of enforced disappearances regularly, with the assistance of law enforcing agencies to trace missing persons in Islamabad.

Proceedings of the commission are being held at Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Quetta periodically.

On January 1, 2011, 138 missing persons’ cases were pending with the commission. Furthermore 1,944 new cases were received between January 1, 2011 and June 30, 2014. Out of which, 744 cases were disposed of, while 1,338 cases still remain.
