LAHORE, July 16: The chief minister is learnt to have allowed a further 180-day delay in the local elections under the existing local government system.
The elections will be delayed after an amendment to the Local Government Ordinance 2001.
Officials said on Tuesday the bill seeking the amendment and extension would be introduced in the next session of the provincial assembly for adoption.
The Punjab government has been extending the date for local elections for more than four years now by repeatedly amending the PLGO 2001, directly controlling the district governments through district coordination officers and tehsil municipal officers acting as administrators.
It had introduced a bill of a new local government system of its choice in the last assembly, but it lapsed because of completion of the assembly term.
Right now a team of government officials is working on a new draft, but officials are not sure when it will be finalised.
