KARACHI: Provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Memon on Wednesday said that Sindh government is ready to hold local government elections in the province as per the time frame given by the Supreme Court.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of Sindh Cabinet here on Wednesday, he said amendments would be made by Sindh Assembly in the 1979 Local Government Ordinance as and where required.
The Supreme Court has ordered provincial governments to hold local government polls preferably on Sept 15, and to complete all legal formalities for the elections, including delimitation of constituencies, by Aug 15.
Memon said a committee headed by the provincial law minister has already started work to suggest amendments to the ordinance with the consultation of political parties and stakeholders.
Sharjeel Memon said that increase in women seats in the local government system was also under consideration.
He said the committee will submit draft amendments to the chief minister and then it would be brought before the Sindh Assembly. The whole process would be completed before Aug 15, he added.
He said the Cabinet also discussed the appointments made during the caretaker government as the court has declared those appointments illegal.
Meanwhile, lawmakers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) called for holding local government election in the province as soon as possible.
In a joint statement, the MQM called upon the provincial government to ensure transfer of power to the elected representatives in local government elections as soon as possible.
