LAHORE, July 26: The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) has rejected the draft of the local government system and described it as anti-constitutional as well as anti-people.
“The draft is aimed at further empowering government employees and minimising the role of elected members in local governments,” PML-Q deputy parliamentary leader Waqas Hasan Mokal said. He was presiding over a meeting of party legislators here on Friday to formulate a strategy against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government’s move to introduce a new local government system in Punjab.
Mokal said several clauses of the draft were in violation of the constitution.
“Local governments cannot serve the masses without giving financial freedom to elected members. The PML-N wants to further empower government employees,” he said, adding the PML-Q and other opposition parties would launch protests against the draft and would not let the PML-N impose ‘a system of its choice’ on people of the province.
