ISLAMABAD: Senator Raza Rabbani on Friday resigned from the parliamentary committee on appointment of judges. He has been replaced by another opposition party member, Farooq Naek.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Rabbani said he had presented his resignation to the Leader of Opposition in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, stating that he considered his presence on the committee might cause a clash of interest because he was a practicing lawyer of the high court and the Supreme Court.

Former law minister Naek replaced Mr Rabbani and a notification in this regard has been issued.

According to article 175 amended through 18th Amendment, the parliamentary committee on appointment of judges consists of eight members – four each from the Senate and the National Assembly.

“Out of the eight members of the committee, four shall be from the treasury benches, two from each house and four from the opposition benches, two from each house.

“The nomination of members from the treasury benches shall be made by the Leader of the House and from the opposition benches by the Leader of the Opposition,” the article said.
