UMERKOT, Sept 1: Police arrested on Sunday brother of the main accused in the gang-rape case of a minority woman who was sexually assaulted by three persons in front of her family in Athoo Mail Hiral village, 48 kilometres from here on Friday.

Police registered the case late on Friday night on a complaint lodged by Par Khan Kolhi who accused one Hanif Chandio and two others he failed to recognise of barging into his house and assaulting his wife Hemi.

“I was sleeping when the three barged into the house. They held me hostage and asked about my wife. Then they woke her up and sexually assaulted her by turns in front of me and all my children,” said Par Khan.

He said the accused robbed them of all they had and fled after having locked them up in a room.

Police have conducted several raids on many places to nab the accused and arrested Ali Hassan Chandio, brother of main accused Hanif Chandio, to mount pressure on him to surrender.

Meanwhile, Dr Leela Pardeep examined the victim and collected samples for medico-legal formalities and sent them to Karachi for chemical examination. She said that she could not say at that moment if the woman had been assaulted or not because she was married. It would be confirmed after laboratory results which would be received in two days at the minimum or six months at the maximum, she said.

The victim feared that health department would not help her prove the case as the results of medico-legal tests could be tampered with.

Various civil society organisations, including Aurat Foundation, Human Rights Organisation and District Development Association Tharparkar condemned the gruesome incident and said they had offered the victim legal aid and they would help her at all platforms to ensure she was served justice.
