LANDI KOTAL: A so-called pro-government peace committee here shot dead one of its opponents on Saturday over suspicions that he was a spy.

According to sources, volunteers of the Tauheedul Islam (TI) group kidnapped Miraj and Waris a few days ago on suspicion of their involvement in two explosions and secretly working for a rival faction, Lashkar-i-Islam.

The sources said that Waris was shot dead after he ‘confessed to his crimes’.

The fate of Miraj was not known, but according to the sources, a shura of Tauheedul Islam had ordered his killing too.

This was the second such incident in three days. The TI had killed two people on similar charges in Bazaar Zakhakhel on Thursday.

The group’s shura alleged that the men were involved in two bomb blasts that took place in the Mastak area during the past two weeks. The explosions left three of its volunteers dead and three others injured. No group claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the Tauheedul Islam blamed the Lashkar for them.

The TI parted ways with the Lashkar-i-Islam after the latter allegedly killed a Zakhakhel cleric in 2011 and since then clashes between them have caused heavy casualties on both sides.

NATO CONTAINER: A Nato container was charred and two were damaged by armed attackers in Jamrud on Saturday.

According to officials, masked men on motorcycles and a car opened fire at the containers hardly 100 metres from a checkpost at Hawaldari, manned by Khasadar and Levies personnel in Sur Kamar area on the Peshawar-Torkham highway.

The drivers and cleaners of the three vehicles ran away, while the attackers took away one of the containers and set it on fire. The two other vehicles were damaged.

The road remained closed for some time, but was later opened and the damaged vehicles were sent to Afghanistan.

In an attack on May 5, two transporters were killed and three vehicles torched by men riding motorcycles in Wazir Dhand market in the presence of over 20 security personnel.

The administration has banned motorcycle riding in Jamrud a number of times in the recent past in an attempt to ensure security of Nato supplies.
